The formation of the volcanic landscape is surprisingly simple, yet beautiful. The landscape of Mt. Etna is formed solely by one material and one force: Lava and gravity. This project presents the “Material Gesture” of lava itself by paradoxically inserting a large concrete platform in the middle of the volcanic terrain. The horizontal observatory deliberately chooses to rest silent, instead of mimicking or re-interpreting the natural materiality of the lava, as a means to display the volcanic landscape and truly cherish it’s beauty.
